The sword of information for my survival The Naphakade school is a relatively new build school, which had a library room but nothing in it. A beautiful schoollibrary is esthablished, supplied with books and encyclopedia delivered by Biblionef. the school is just outside the Cape Town city in a farming area called Malmesbury. The Naphakade school has been grwoing in leaps over the past three years and has presently 1200 children attending. When the school was formally openend one of the students, Mkhanyiseli Kunen, grade 12 rendered a speech for the invited guests A citate: 'Today in the generation where knowledge is so abundant we the current generation seem to overlook this blessing. Knowledge is power for us and all of us want to be powerful and govern our own destiny. The library should be our first weopan. I say thank you for everybody who made this possible. I therefore say:'I will use the sword of information for my survival'.
Pleas Stepmore is part of the Southern Drakensbergen in KwaZuluNatal, a rural area. In this project Biblionef operated in close cooperation with the Family Literacy Project (FLP). The container library has been placed alongside the community hall and near the Somangwe Primary School and Lusiza Pre-School. It is within easy walking distance of Batlokoa Secondary School. the library is allready open for sometime. The library closed in early December for the school holidays and was due to re-open at the end of Januar but so many people begged to be allowed to use it that it opened again on the 5th January. This is a claer indication that many people want to read if given the opportunity. FLP has committed to report to Biblionef on a regular basis.
Make this library your friend The township Steelport is situated in the Mpumalanga area. In november 2002 the Ga-Morpodile Development Forum of Steelport approached Biblionef to assist them with a library. Together they decided to place a containerlibrary for the community. 5 Dutch funders helped to make this project possible. In total their financial support was 110.000 South African Rand (SAR). A librarian without work was found to look afther the daily routine.
In the library you can find 900 books in English and Sepedi donated by Biblionef including three sets of Encyclopaedias, 800 booksdonated by the Provincial Library Service and 200 books donated by the American Embassy. The library was opened in March 2004, with almost the whole community, especially children in attandance.
Mr. Francois Hendrickz, Director of Mpumalnga Library Service (MLS), urged the children: 'to make this library their friend'. The Mayor of Steelport said she hoped that future scientists and ministers would come forth from this community, as they now have a library! Biblionef South Africa, the Steelport Library Community and the MLS have entered in a contract of agreement. This is to ensure that the container is well cared for and properly managed by the registered parties.
